Coach's sportsmanship, both in and out of the ring

Coaches should remember that they set the example to their boxers when it comes to good sportsmanship. Too many coaches tell their boxers, that they got “robbed” after losing a close bout, instead of simply saying, the decision didn’t go their way in a bout that they thought they had won. Too many times a coach will get overly excited or frustrated over a decision that doesn’t go his boxer’s way and therefore starts to get into the drama of insulting the referee, judges or the opposing coach. His actions are seen by everyone, including the fans, which only leaves a bad example of sportsmanship, for all to see. Also, there are coaches who think that because they do not have any more athletes competing in a show, they can act less than professional and not represent the ideals of amateur boxing and the South Texas Boxing Association. These are all examples which coaches should strive to avoid and concentrate on what is most important to our success, the athlete.

Start focusing on what this sport is all about…guiding young athletes through positive examples, proper training and being a positive role model in their lives. Remember you are ultimately responsible for your boxers at shows and anytime you have taken the responsibility for them (i.e. transporting them to and from an event).

A boxer’s actions are a direct reflection of his coach and a coach’s action are a direct reflection on our sport.

Coaches and Boxers remember:
Respect your opponent
Respect the sport
Respect the rules
